White Water Rafting 2007!
So I went white water rafting for the first time ever yesterday with a buncha friends in Ohiopyle, PA…It was SOOOOO much fun!!! We got there at noon after driving for about 3 hours. The weather was perfect! After hanging around as other people showed up, the tourguides talked a bit and gave us our lifejackets and helmets. Eventually we made our way to the schoolbusses to take us to where the river was. ‘BJ’, one of the guides, gave us a good talkin to about safety before letting us carry our rafts down to the river. He reminded us not to get offended if he was cursing at us while we were going down the river. There were 84 people in total, 11 from our group. We broke up our group into two rafts: 5 and 6. I was in the 6 person with Haris, Zoha, DK, Donnie, and Gary…which was obviously the better raft than Hamza’s, with Salman, Huda, Andy, and Hamza’s roommate who’s name I can’t spell.
The best part was seeing all the fobs show up after us…right as they started handing out the life jackets, this group of aunties and uncles shows up with their kids. Late as usual eh? haha. I’ll just say, they looked like they had an interesting time, especially the raft with just 3-4 aunties in it. And that kid who kept asking questions…non-stop! And then Abhishek…oh Abhishek. Everyone kept saying his name, but we were never sure which kid he was. Also, I didn’t know how to take the fact that my flip-flops broke as soon as I stepped in the water for the first time. I tied them to my life jacket and went on my way. It was all really cool though…the guides were everywhere, so we didn’t really have to worry about getting into trouble. It was almost too safe..but what can you do-better safe than sorry.
We rafted ~8 miles in total and had a buncha breaks in between (to throw people in of course). I got dunked twice…I was the first to go down thanks to Hamza, who aimed for and missed getting Donnie…and the second time with Salman…I got him in too though ! The water was freezing at first! My feet were numb from the cold, but eventually we all got used to it and it was actually kinda nice. There were some good rapids there too-class 3-4 (out of 5). Other people got wet too-I remember seeing the fob auntie’s raft stuck next to a rock with the aunties getting help from the guides. I turned around to see what was going on and I just remember seeing one of the aunties soaked and looking miserable. She looked like a drowned cat lol. Yea, not fun.
We stopped after about 2 hours I think to get lunch on the shore…they had sandwich stuff laid out for everyone, which we tore into…We were back on the river for the long haul after that. After we threw everyone in a bunch of times and got stuck on lots of rocks, we made it down to the pickup spot and got back to the busses waiting for us. Man that was tiring, but SO much fun! Plus I had to go barefoot uphill with the raft since my flip-flops were useless. We were all exhausted and really hungry…and glad to get back to the setup area where our cars were so we could shower and change and get outta there! We drove back and stopped off near Salisbury, PA at a Burger King and a Subway to get dinner. My stomach was killing me, so I was glad to get some food. We spent the trip back telling ghost stories and playing Antakshari, which I suck at, but that’s ok. I’m learning to be more fobby
We got back to CP at about midnight. We were all dead tired and kinda achy. Overall-I’d definitely do it again sometime. It’s soo much fun and you have to do it with a lot of people. If you haven’t gone, you should go! Even if you can’t swim. Just ask Haris. I think I’m still hungry from last night, so time for lunch! Until next time… Here are some photos:
